ABSTRACT

Elementary linear algebra deals with solving systems of linear equations and operations on matrices. Systems of linear equations and matrices have a wide variety of applications. This chapter introduces some basic matrix operations and techniques for solving systems of equations. It presents an example of solving simple systems of linear equations. Elementary applications of linear algebra often involve describing a scenario with a system of equations and then solving the system. The chapter presents four such applications: traffic flow, balancing chemical equations, and two economics applications. It illustrates how to fit polynomial models to data and introduces multiple regression and spline models. The chapter also includes exercise problems related the concept of linear algebra.
