ABSTRACT

Mangroves vegetation is of immense values which usually refer to a wide variety of benefits harnessed out of ecosystem services. Nevertheless, people have common queries of why mangroves need to be protected. What service do mangroves cater to coastal zone areas? Which benefits do they render to human beings? All these queries are apparently not to be the subject related to the existence of mangroves, but appear to be mere inquisitiveness to those involved in mangroves protection, at least to planners who are supposed to care for this unique coastal vegetation. To resolve the queries, Saenger (2002), in his classical monograph on mangroves, highlighted many facets of value that mangroves provide, and categorized them broadly into four groups: (i) economic, products value; (ii) usefulness, ecosystem value; (iii) intrinsic, natural value; and (iv) symbolic, cultural and mythical value.
