ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the application of the qualitative and quantitative approaches that are applied to rolling resistance determination. The functional design relates to providing a surfacing layer, commonly referred to as a wearing course, or sheeting, that has the ideal characteristics at the point where the tyre meets the road. The functional design of a haul road is the process of selecting the most appropriate wearing course material or mix of materials, typically natural gravel or crushed stone and gravel mixtures that are commensurate with safety, operational, environmental and economic considerations. Usually construction density is specified as achievable at the laboratory optimum moisture content. Functionality, represented as the defect score at a particular point in time is a reflection of the type of wearing course material used and its engineering properties, the level of maintenance, season and traffic volumes.
