ABSTRACT

School is an institution in which the Hallway Hangers and the Brothers are forced into daily contact. Many of the attitudes we already have uncovered are played out in school and made manifest in the boys' conduct. Lincoln High School students from all four grades in the main academic program are sorted randomly into the four main houses of the school, as are staff members from all the academic areas. Enterprise Co-op is an alternative, career-oriented program that includes student-run businesses for dropouts and potential dropouts. The Fundamental School, which originated when a group of parents decided that the high school was not regimented enough, employs an educational philosophy at the other end of the spectrum. Juan, a 1983 graduate of the high school, studied culinary arts in the Occupational Education Program. For the most part, Frankie exemplifies the Hallway Hangers' attitudes toward school; he is unusual only in that he graduated.
