ABSTRACT
This chapter briefly reviews the key characteristics and performance of the commonly used spark ignited (SI) or gasoline IC engines, which are more related to hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) development. This chapter also reviews other types of engines that are possible for use in HEVs, such as four-stroke compression ignition (CI) engines (mostly fueled with diesel) and alternative-fueled engines.
