ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information about diseases which are affecting banana produce and possible effective remedies for those diseases. The word banana is believed to be originated from West Africa, possibly from the Wolof word banana, and passed into English via Spanish or Portuguese. Banana bacterial wilt (BBW) is a bacterial disease and all banana cultivars in affected areas are susceptible to BBW. Banana xanthomonas wilt is caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris pv. Musacearum. The Xanthomonas pathogen can infect banana plants in numerous ways. Decapitation of male flower buds after flowering, disinfecting the farm tools after use and disinfecting hands, and destruction of affected banana stools and burying them reduced the inoculum. Banana bract mosaic virus causes significant yield losses in banana and abaca in the Philippines, India, and Sri Lanka. Banana mild mosaic virus is a recently described filamentous virus found in symptomatic plants of banana.
