ABSTRACT

The applications of biotechnology includes plant tissue culture, production of transgenic in animal and plants, applications in medicine as tools and therapeutics, creation of new enzymes and their immobilisation for industrial use, development of monoclonal antibodies and control of pollutions, etc. Although genetically engineered organisms in agriculture have been available for over 40 years, their commercial use has expanded rapidly. Recent estimates are that more than 60-70% of food products on store shelves may contain at least a small quantity of crops produced with these new techniques. Transgenic crops and their resulting foods in the United States are extensively researched and reviewed by three federal government agencies: the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Each agency is responsible for a different part of the review process.
