ABSTRACT
Consider an antenna where current runs up and down at a high frequency (Figure 17.1). At a snapshot in time, there is a dipole (i.e., positive charge at one end and negative charge at the other end). This dipole results in an E field outside the antenna. In the picture, the B field is perpendicular to the page. The E and B fields propagate away from the antenna. This is an electromagnetic wave.
