ABSTRACT
This chapter presents a simple review of the basics of chronic hyperglycemia, including a brief history of the discovery of pancreatic function in glucose metabolism, and the characteristics of pancreatic beta-cell dysfunction that result in insulin dysregulation and, ultimately, diabetes. The chapter also describes the symptoms of Type 2 diabetes, and begins to relate them to the pathophysiological changes that are seen in many body organs and functions.
