ABSTRACT

The botanicals/herbals in this chapter were selected also because their action in glycemic control is analogous to that of certain conventional prescription medications. For instance, lychees lower blood sugar by inhibiting gluconeogenesis. Furthermore, their inhibition of aldose reductase, and oligonol content, may help to prevent diabetic cataract formation.

Certain mushrooms are anti-inflammatory and have hypoglycemic properties. Safflower seeds, extract, and oil lower blood glucose. Many other examples are also cited and the scientific evidence for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiglycemic effects is documented in this chapter.
