ABSTRACT

This chapter is limited to the principal elements of noise control that need to be considered in the design process and is not intended as a solution manual. There are no simple closed form equations that exist for "finding the answer" in noise control as the process is complex and the variables quite numerous. There are three major sources of noise that contribute to the entire system's noise emissions; they are inlet, exhaust, and casing emissions. There are two elements of sound that one work with: sound pressure level and sound power level as measured and reported in decibel levels. When one speak of acoustics most think of music, stereo systems and other elements of the science of producing sound in a pleasurable manner. Silencer design must take into consideration several attributes that constitute the final design of a silencer.
