ABSTRACT

Introduction A warehouse with a WMS program has three major interacting information components that direct warehouse SKU transactions and customer-order transactions. The components are 1) the host or company IT computer with a program to maintain and account for the total SKU quantities in the warehouse; 2) a computer that tracks the SKU quantity in each position and order entries and exits from the warehouse; and 3) warehouse control or computers that direct employees or equipment to move SKUs between positions or drop points, as well as completing pick transactions by moving SKUs from pick positions into containers or cartons. As a vendor-delivered SKU becomes a SKU, and then becomes an order, the SKU (and relevant information) flows through a warehouse (see Figure 3.1).
