Natural menthol is obtained by freeze crystallization from crude cornmint oil. Although the
oil has been produced in a number of different countries, the major cornmint oil producers
are India and China. In general, 48% to 50% of the menthol present in cornmint oil can be
from 100 kg of oil (in which menthol content
ranges from 70% to 77%), 33.6 to 38.5 kg of menthol can be isolated using normal production
procedures.
