ABSTRACT

Swine have been used as experimental animals throughout history, mainly in anatomical and physiological research. In his De Humani Corporis Fabrica from 1543, Vesalius referred to swine experiments performed by the Roman physician Galen (130-200 AD), but made observations in swine himself as well. Also, Harvey, in his Anatomica de Motu Cordis et Sanguinis Animalibus (1628), and Bernard, in his Introduction à l'étude de la médicine expérimental (1865), described observations made in swine. At present, swine are used in a wide range of disciplines.
