ABSTRACT

The most important component of radiation safety is knowledge. NMTs and students of nuclear medicine technology must learn quickly that, to practice safety, they need to familiarize themselves with everything that is being done in the NM department. The NM department serves the community by providing (a) diagnostic procedures, mostly imaging, that depict functional images of the patients’ organ systems and (b) therapeutic radionuclide procedures that alleviate the patients’ illnesses. Furthermore, the staff of the NM department must perform their work while abiding by strict federal laws, state regulations, and in-house administrative policies.
