Pumps are the usual source of energy necessary for the transportation of water from one location to another through various sizes and types of pipe. The only exception may be where the source of energy is supplied entirely by gravity. Modem waterworks operators must therefore be familiar with pumps, pump characteristics, pump operation and maintenance.17
