ABSTRACT

Schedule compression is one way of satisfying a due date constraint on a project. One effective technique of achieving schedule compression is the precedence diagramming method, which is an extension of the basic program evaluation review technique (PERT) or critical path method (CPM). The lead–lag relationships may also be specified in terms of “at most” relationships instead of “at least” relationships. The lead–lag constraints allow us to compress or overlap activities. A portion of an activity that overlaps with a portion of another activity may be viewed as a distinct portion of the required work. Line of balance is a planning, scheduling, and control tool that enhances the traditional benefits of PERT/CPM and helps identify where project duration can be shortened. The required quantities at a specific point in time are indicated graphically in the progress chart as a stepped horizontal line across the chart.
