ABSTRACT

Industrial trends and initiatives aim to “connect the unconnected.” Millions of embedded devices are used in safety and security critical applications such as industrial control systems, modern vehicles, and critical infrastructure. Industrial Internet of Things (IoT) brings many new challenges with regard to different aspects, including security, privacy, standardization, legal, and social aspects. Devices in the IoT generate, process, and exchange vast amounts of security and safety-critical data, as well as privacy-sensitive information, and hence are appealing targets of various attacks. The very nature of IoT devices is to collect, process, and relay data through a communication channel and sometimes control a much larger unit. Security for connected consumer devices gets all the attention. However, electronics companies should also focus deeply on security for industrial systems used to manufacture components and increasingly high-tech products. Electronics companies are aware of the cybersecurity risks and are working to manage their security spending accordingly.
