ABSTRACT

This chapter provides some guidance on the requirements for installation, maintenance and repair. It also lists the Regulations' requirements for maintenance etc. with respect to electrical installations. The most important factor that affects the overall reliability of a modern product (system or installation) is the increased number of individual components that are required in that product. Since most system failures are actually caused by the failure of a single component, the reliability of each individual component must be considerably better than the overall system reliability. The design of an electrical installation should aim at reducing the effect of induced voltage disturbances and electromagnetic interferences, and the installation design shall take into consideration the anticipated electromagnetic disturbances generated either by the installation itself or the installed equipment. The type of earthing system to be used for an electrical installation needs to take into consideration the characteristics of the source of energy and any current earthing facilities.
