ABSTRACT

Leaks are looked for under wash hand basins, kitchen sinks and baths, and below shower trays. Ducts are occasionally unscrewed or even levered off so pipework can be inspected. Voids are checked using rigid and flexible endoscopes that can be fed into the void via a narrow gap or through a nominal drill hole. Pipes full of a liquid to an extent ‘self-test’ in that leakage will show itself visually as a leak/drip/or pooled water, most commonly caused by a faulty joint or connection. The Vernon Morris kit comprises firstly a listening stick that uses mechanical amplification of vibration sounds for detecting leakage – most useful for pinpointing the location of the leak. Leak detection will follow a logical sequence of stages from initial client briefing, job quoting and client instructions, through to report writing and sometimes design of remedial work and then supervision of work on-site.
