ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the basic principles of nonstandard sampling accessories and gives an overview of their practical capabilities. The nonstandard sampling accessories such as laser ablation systems, flow injection analyzers, electrothermal vaporizers, cooled spray chambers, desolvation equipment, direct injection nebulizers, automated sample delivery systems, autodilutors, and online chemistry procedures are considered critical to enhancing the practical capabilities of the productivity enhancement technique. A recent development in automation is in the area of advanced, automated sample identification and tracking systems that can accurately associate stored information with a sample throughout the sample collection/preparation/introduction process. Through a series of four distinct stages, this technology uses barcodes to enter, store, and reference data associated with a sample from initial collection to taring and final dilution.
