ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights why there are a variety of related analytical chemical “tests” which are important for the determination of different chemical constituents in cannabis products. It is intended to be an important overview of the current analytical techniques and instrumentation employed today and in the future for the safety of cannabis-derived products. In addition, as a result of inconsistencies in heavy metal action limits across state lines in the United States, regulators would be well advised to look to the pharmaceutical community for much-needed guidance on how best to prepare the cannabis industry for federal oversight. Validation procedures are an integral part of ensuring high-quality data using the chosen analytical method when carrying out the measurement of elemental impurities in drug compounds. The chapter shows that the pharmaceutical community can offer much guidance and direction to understanding what additional elemental contaminants might be of concern to the cannabis industry.
