ABSTRACT

Cryptogamaes are split into two sections. This chapter reviews non-vascular plants. A total of nine species is provided and described in detail. As each species is presented, information on the taxonomy, plant use, and specifically the key natural products isolated from each plant is provided. “Forkweed” contains diterpenes, auxins, cytokinins, flavonoids, tannins, and coumarin (C9H6O2). It is also used for treating cancer and inflammation. “Green alga” is known for its antioxidant activity because of its ability to create a large amount of carotenoids. It is used in cosmetics and dietary supplements. It contains carotene (C40Hx), zeaxanthin (C40H56O2), and lutein (C40H56O2), and also is anti-bacterial and in addition is useful for treating inflammation, cancer, and asthma. “Sargassum big leaves” contains fucoxanthin (C42H58O6) and fatty acids. It is used for treating inflammation and cancer. In addition, it has anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties.
