ABSTRACT

The newly discovered radiation showed characteristics of particles, in contrast to the electromagnetic radiation, which was treated as a wave. The dictionary gives essentially the same meaning for both accuracy and precision, but in experimental work, they have different meanings. This chapter concerns only pulse-type counting systems. Also shown are an amplifier, single-channel analyzer, pulser, and timer/counter. The preamplifier shapes the signal and reduces its attenuation by matching the impedance of the detector with that of the amplifier. In most cases, the HV is fed to the detector through the preamplifier. In radiation measurements, the oscilloscope is used to check the quality of the signal as well as the level and type of the electronic noise. It is always a good practice before any measurement is attempted to examine the signal at the output of the amplifier. The multichannel analyzer records and stores pulses according to their height.
