ABSTRACT

In this chapter a shared aperture antenna with orthogonal pattern diversity is presented for mmWave 5G base station applications. Gain enhancement technique such as parasitic loading would lead to a larger electrical footprint and poor pattern integrity; on the other hand, typical metamaterial unit cells have a strong polarization sensitivity, and hence a dual-polarized metamaterial unit cell is designed and characterized with identical characteristics for both of the incident orthogonal polarizations. The proposed unit cells are strategically integrated with the shared aperture tapered slot antenna to achieve gain enhancement, gain equalization across the ports and the band, along with a reduction in mutual coupling.
