ABSTRACT

The need for phased array modules in the context of 5G mobile terminals is introduced in this chapter. A comparison of phased array versus pattern diversity modules is presented. Phased array designs in the context of millimetre waves is explained in detail, including a section on beam scanning for a multi-port antenna system. The need for a corner bent array is explained, along with the characterization of a planar and corner bent transmission line on a flexible substrate. A corner bent phased array designed on a polycarbonate substrate is explained with beam scanning. The design constraints, along with the characterization of the phased array, are also included in this chapter. Design guidelines for a phased array for millimetre wave frequencies is given at the end of the chapter.
