ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 discusses how large energy, process, and metal companies implemented their own continuous-improvement programs. These companies used enterprise information data infrastructure (EIDI) standardization to simplify their implementation, maintenance, and enterprise-wide analysis of process operations and their fleet of assets. Use cases from companies using an EIDI are presented: an international integrated oil and gas company; a North American midstream petroleum services company; an international gold-mining company; a multinational building materials company; and an international specialty chemicals company. Their use cases, methodology, and results are similar. The EIDI became their consolidated time-series system of record; existing data silos were consolidated; they added context to the EIDI data in real time, so that it became more easily usable by people or analytics software; the companies enabled self-service access to the EIDI data; they collaborated to solve difficult problems and to innovate with new use cases, changing the corporate culture.
