ABSTRACT

The use of medicinal plants for healing purposes is as old as mankind. Some of the life-saving drugs in the modern medicine have originated from plants. The plant grows as climbing bushy shrub having glabrous leaves. Stems noticeably ridged and furrowed when dried, and leaf petiole size varies, usually 3–3.5 cm long and gets shortest on leaves toward apex of stem. Traditional healers are named according to the method used for the treatment; for example, herbal healers use plants or natural products to cure the diseases, blowing healers use blowing procedure to treat the small injuries, and masseuses use massage oil or massage process to treat muscle problems. Plant-, animal- and mineral-based medicines used singularly or in combination are the basis of Ayurvedic or traditional medical practices. The fruits, seeds, leaves, branches, roots and stems of Piper plants are rich in essential oils.
