ABSTRACT

Project management in the healthcare environment is unique from project management in other industries in several ways. A primary driver for modern-day project management was the increasingly complex projects undertaken by the US government and a need to somehow better manage and control those projects. In contrast, while Information Technologists may have a good grasp of project management and the technical issues of their projects, they may need to hone their “people skills.” A project life cycle is series of events a project undergoes from beginning to end. There are four major types of management within an organization: strategic, operations, crisis, and project management. It is important to understand the differences between these different types in order to appreciate where the project manager fits and his or her added value. Operations management is also a proactive type of management, managing the ongoing operations of an organization.
