ABSTRACT

The chapter deals with the further development of Systems Engineering into more complex systems, namely System of System Engineering. The basic properties distinguishing complex systems are first discussed, especially the concepts of synergy and multidimensional complexity. Different aspects of complexity are analysed, such as structural, spatial, temporal, and disciplinary. On this basis, the concept of System of Systems (SoS) is introduced as a mix of independently operating and actively interacting large systems, integrated with complex goals. A general mathematical model for SoS-type systems and detailed models for network structures, typical of complex network organizations, have been proposed. The following part of the chapter is devoted to Engineered System of Systems, and particularly to the process of creating such systems, i.e., architecting. The purpose of the architecting process is to provide the required properties to the created systems by incorporating into it the so-called metasystem that fulfils a governance role. The functional structure of the metasystem is proposed and the basic functions and sub-functions that a properly designed metasystem should fulfil are characterized.
