ABSTRACT

The next eight chapters provide an in-depth overview of the CSEC2017 knowledge areas. The first of these area is Data Security. That is an appropriate place to start because data is a ubiquitous part of modern life. Without data, people and organizations would have no records. In business, data supports the ability to perform transactions, serve customers, and make managerial decisions. Thus, in this day and age, every individual and every private or public sector organization relies on the data that is processed by their information and communication technology systems. Therefore, Data Security is a critical aspect of cybersecurity.

The CSEC provides an extensive discussion of Data Security. It will help the reader understand how cryptography is an underlying enabler of Data Security, as well as the importance of cryptanalysis in Data Security. It explains the role of access control in preserving Data Security and secure architecture and how authentication techniques are used to preserve data integrity and mitigate attacks. It also examines the communication protocols that offer the best levels of Data Security. In the larger sense, it also examines how data privacy is factored into the overall understanding of Data Security. Finally, it completes the entire life cycle by examining the various techniques for data sanitation and for proper disposal of data after its useful life.
