ABSTRACT

Morphometrics (describing aspects of body shape) and meristics (countable characters like fin rays, spines) are the most used morphological characters used to differentiate the closely related fishes. The genus Toxotes, in particular of the species Toxotes chatareus and T. jaculatrix are very similar in appearance and until now external marking (body coloration) and/or number of dorsal spines (simple descriptive statistics) are used to differentiate these two species.

This chapter aims to find out other morphological distinctions using multivariate approach that can also be used to distinguish these closely related archer fishes more precisely.
