ABSTRACT

Two-dimensional plane-stress and plane-strain problems of elastic solids are presented in this chapter. Stress function-based analysis method is introduced first to highlight the efficiencies and challenges of using this analytical method in practical stress analysis problems. Finite element formulation details of 2D stress analysis problems are presented next to make the readers fully aware of the inner details to ensure correct element choices are made while using a commercial analysis software package. This chapter also introduces the readers to the use of a commercial software package (HyperMesh) for preparing finite element analysis models with large number of nodes and elements. Practice problems on model preparations for finite element analysis are presented at the end of this chapter.
