ABSTRACT

Stress responses of beams for axial, bending, transverse shear, and torsional load effects are discussed in Sections 6.1–6.5 followed by a discussion on elastic deflection analysis of beams in Section 6.6. Section 6.7 presents a brief review on stress analysis of curved beams. Stiffness method analysis of beams, based on the analytical principles discussed in earlier sections, is introduced in Sections 6.8 and 6.9, respectively, for Euler–Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam elements. Section 6.10 presents a description of beam analysis options available in general-purpose finite element software ABAQUS. Practice examples on stress analysis of beams, based on both analytical and finite element methods, are presented in Section 6.11.
