ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a discussion on the causes, diagnosis, and investigation of symptoms related to genitals in patients. It provides a general practitioner overview, differential diagnosis, possible investigations, and top tips for dealing with genital symptoms. The symptoms discussed are erectile dysfunction, haemospermia, painful intercourse, penile pain, penile ulceration/sores, scrotal swelling, testicular pain, vaginal discharge, vulval irritation, vulval swelling, and vulval ulceration/sores. The differential diagnosis includes common, occasional, and rare causes of the symptoms. Vulval irritation encompasses soreness and itch and is a very common presentation in primary care. Vulval swellings may originate in the vulva, or appear there after displacement from their origin.
