ABSTRACT

Despite the exploitation of herbal medicines in disease supervision, there is still a paucity of information regarding their genotoxicity profile. Therefore, there is a concern regarding the safety of phytopharmaceuticals. It is quite complicated to detect genetic toxicity in herbals. To determine genotoxicity in herbals, documentary guidance from a regulatory authority, the European Medicinal Agency (EMA), is referred. The plant parts, secondary metabolites and phytochemical constituents can be tested through diverse methods such as Ames test, nucleus mouse test and Comet test. This chapter focuses on the comprehensive methods for the estimation of genotoxicity in herbal formulations with examples.
