ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an understanding of how the physical and chemical properties of bricks, like strength and durability, as well as appearance, depend mainly on the type of clay or other material and the method of manufacture used. During the 1980s, the majority of brickworks achieved and have maintained accreditation to ISO 9001 ‘Quality Management Systems’. The forming processes used to manufacture the majority of bricks in the UK fall into three categories: soft-mud moulding by hand or machine, extrusion/wire-cut or semi-dry pressing. The traditional brick used in conjunction with a range of specials is able to produce brickwork that has variety in character; however, some manufacturers have developed single units that satisfy particular requirements. Bricklayers and supervisors should be aware of authoritative guidance available on matters related to their craft.
