ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses solar power conversion systems. An overview of the solar systems, their status, and developments to-date are provided. The opportunities for off-grid electrifications for different parts of the world are provided, and the African continent’s opportunities and status are discussed in detail. The power electronics systems that are the building blocks of solar conversion systems are discussed by addressing different topologies that are used for typical portable solar systems. The chapter also presents simulation studies of a practical power electronic systems for an off-grid solar system with consideration of typical DC and AC loads for rural areas. The challenges of solar systems, including structural, operational, and planning are discussed; the trend of off-grid electrification around the world, and northern Canada in particular, are discussed with an overlooking 2030 for a universal access to electricity.
