ABSTRACT

For couplings between optical fibers (or waveguides) and microscale waveguides, reflective-self-organizing lightwave networks (R-SOLNET) are formed by introducing write beams from the optical fibers (or waveguides). For in-plane couplings between nanoscale waveguides and light modulators, it might also be possible to form P/R-SOLNETs before optoelectronic (OE)Film stacking. Since the light sources generate considerable heat, it is preferable for thermal managements not to place the light sources within the 3D structure. The cw or pulse-train lights can be inserted into the 3D structure by introducing them from the optical fibers (or waveguides) into the waveguides in the OE board via vertical mirrors. They can also be inserted into the 3D structure by introducing them from light sources mounted on the waveguides in the OE board via the vertical mirrors. Vertical couplings of R-SOLNET between nanoscale waveguides and micro scale waveguides in the OE board are formed by introducing write beams from the microscale waveguides.
