ABSTRACT

Herbal formulation having one or more herbs in specified quantity prescribed to achieve specific therapeutic activity. This chapter mainly focused on various polyherbal formulations used as a hepatoprotective. Biochemical analysis showed a significant increase in the levels of alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate aminotranferase, alkaline phosphatase, total bilirubin, creatinine, urea, cholesterol, and triglyceride with a reduction in total protein levels of rats administered acetaminophen only. The authors found that the polyherbal mixture prevents the rise in ALT with respect to those treated with anti-TB drugs alone; thus, the authors concluded that this polyherbal mixture possesses a hepatoprotective effect. The study confirms the antihepatotoxic activity of Jigrine, which may be attributed to the membrane stabilizing and antioxidant property of this medicine. The study with RT-PCR and confocal microscopy experiments showed that ethanol induced suppression of PPARgamma expression in HepG2 cells. Partly assayed indexes were ameliorated after administrated the media dose of Zhi-Zi-Da-Huang decoction. .
