ABSTRACT
Scientific infrastructure at large scale, and cost, is a major aspect in many areas of science. This has included my own field of structural chemistry and structural biology. As an interesting case study, the proposed UK X-ray laser, I describe the efforts that are undertaken to describe a new facility and its research possibilities so as to try and secure its funding.
