ABSTRACT
As an example of an urgent societal relevant research challenge, when it is absolutely necessary to move fast yet take care, I describe the efforts made for the understanding of coronavirus, covid-19 in 2020. It shows explicitly the importance of acting both expeditiously and merging science, advice, knowledge and its uncertainties, as well as common sense. I give examples of successes as well as less successful handling of the pandemic by some countries.
