ABSTRACT

Classification of the nanostructured materials is a useful method to treat them systematically and to design new nanostructured materials. This chapter discusses the classification of the nanostructured materials and expands to cover fractal and porous structures based on several projects concerning complex systems. Then the general effects of nano-sizing are discussed. Many nanostructured materials contain several network structures, and therefore the dimensions or fractal dimensions of network structures are important measures of the complexity of the structures. The dimensionality of assembly of structural units is discussed by the fractal dimension rather than dimension of space. In nanostructured materials, nanoparticles and/or nano-sized domains are contained in many cases. They can be dispersed, mixed in layers, pellets, and films. Nanostructured materials have useful properties such as high conductivity, high storage power of materials and energy if a suitable combination of constituents and nanoscopic structures are designed.
