ABSTRACT

The highway detail engineering is done by considering the design criteria, terrain classification, whether plain & rolling or hilly terrain, high flood level, climatic condition, geology etc. Next, the roadway capacity and levels of service (LOS) is determined in respect of the design vehicle, design speed, lane configuration, access control, traffic, effect of terrain, and sight distance, etc.

This chapter mentions about the design standards that are decided for the lane requirement, lane width, shoulders, medians, side slopes, right of way (ROW), cross sectional elements, super elevation, at-grade intersections, interchanges, interchange elements, median openings, underpasses/cattle crossings, subsurface drainage, surface drainage, general arrangements for bridges and structures.
