ABSTRACT

The design of horizontal alignment for road geometrics is the route from origin to destination and is commonly done either for a new highway passing through a greenfield or for upgrading an existing highway as brownfield alignment. The alignment has to take care of considerations like existing land use, right of way topography, public demand, the ecology, the properties along the alignment, drainage, minimum vehicle operating cost, natural disaster-prone areas, issues in construction, crossing of railways, rivers, lakes, mountains, safety of the road users, safety of the local habitants, achieving the proposed level of service, and economics of the project. The horizontal alignment design is described in this chapter, it must be done by considering all these points and also by following the relevant design standards along with contract requirements.
