ABSTRACT

The design of the vertical alignment is the longitudinal profile of the road and for a new road it is normally based on the criteria of high flood level, terrain topography, road geometrics, right of way, and adjoining land use. The vertical profile for upgrading or widening an existing highway additionally needs to consider the finished road levels of existing bridges, flyovers, cross drainage structures, rail over bridges, vehicular/pedestrian underpasses, visibility, LOS, and safety of the road users and local inhabitants as well. The vertical alignment design described in this chapter must be done by considering all these points and also by following the relevant design standards.
