ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with metros. It provides a definition for this type of mainly underground urban railway systems and proposes their classification into categories based on specific system parameters. Subsequently, it analyses the main design, construction, and operational characteristics of a metro and provides an estimate for its construction cost. Additional information is given on issues concerning stations, platforms, and depots. Finally, this chapter gives the preconditions for the selection of a metro as a transport mode in an urban area and provides an updated (end 2019) overview of the evolution of metros and examples of good practice.
