ABSTRACT

As you read through the following chapter, keep in mind that the main focus is on large-format layouts ranging in size from 8.5 inches by 11 inches to full posters as well as websites showcasing complex web maps. Printed layouts smaller than 8.5 inches by 11 inches tend to contain minimal to nonexistent margin elements. Digital, static layouts don't always need a lot of additional margin elements either, though it very much depends on the content and the map reader's familiarity with the subject. The placement, styling, and best practices for margin elements on printed maps are well described here. Where possible, explanations pertaining to digital, interactive mapping elements are also described, though it is recommended that the reader do additional studying on user interface design, in general, to supplement this, as many techniques that are needed in the digital realm are not limited to just cartography.
