ABSTRACT

The Ramsar wetlands along the western coast of south-central mainland Mexico, in the states of Colima, Michoacan, and Guerrero, include some of the most unique environments discussed thus far, such as within the Archipiélago de Revillagigedo. The south-central mainland region of wetlands demonstrates a definitive shift that occurs along the Mexican mainland coastal region, from more arid environmental conditions to increasingly tropical environmental conditions, indicative of our continued latitudinal journey south. The criticality of the following nine coastal wetland ecosystems (Figure 6.1), specifically for a multitude of terrestrial and aquatic organisms, as well as for the indigenous people of the region, is evident:
