ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we introduce the basic data on the global structure of the earth with emphasis on the upper part, which is accessible to observation. Then we present some general rules, which allow for the measurement of the strike and the dip of the geological layers and an understanding of how they are organized spatially by the analysis of their impacts on the terrestrial topography. 3D printable models, useful for understanding these interactions, are presented at the end of the chapter. They were designed as an aid to “reading” and interpreting geological maps.
